I haven't wrote a blog in a while, however I have been meaning and wanting to write a blog about the lack of motivation at work for ages. It's been a part of my life for the last three years and I just wanted to make others aware of the problems at work. This blog is for all you young people out there who find it hard to be happy in a job that your currently in and can't find your way out.
Imagine being settled within a working environment that your eager to get out of, but you can't. Your that comfortable in the surroundings that you can't move. However one problem in the workplace, has you begging God to find you a way out. The eagerness of wanting to get out could be a number of reasons.
One major reason is MANAGEMENT! When you don't receive no appreciation from them, when the job makes you feel used, when your always wrong but they are forever right and when they make you feel like they don't really need you in the company. All these problems join together and can make a person's self-esteem seem really low. How is an employee supposed to enjoy their job, how can they look forward to coming to work and how can they even manage to put a smile on their face during a shift? All these questions will go through your head while your stuck in this place.
Management do not care about their staff, all they care about is making sure the staff below them are working their ass's off so that they can then take the credit. They want the boss to always believe that them as managers are keeping the place together. Yes they are keeping it together, however by all the hard work of the employees below them. This has been happening within my workplace for a number of years.
After years of looking for a proper job and months of signing on, I was lucky enough to get myself this job through the job centre. Ever since I started this job I knew I did not want to stay here for a long period of time, so I've always been applying for other specific jobs that relate with my degree. However, 'surprise surprise' not one application has been successful. Now how can you possibly move on from a negative environment when other employers won't give you the time of day.
Bearing in mind I have been within my position for 3 years now, I practically know near enough everything about the company however I haven't been promoted. Instead they will hire an outsider to fill positions that they know NOTHING about. I agree that I was once just like any other new staff member, that knows nothing about the position. But what I don't understand is, why hire a random person to fill a higher position, which I have practically grew up around for the last few years? This blog is not rant but it's just a fact that needs to be brought forward.
Now this is where there is no motivation. They expect us to come to a shift overjoyed and show that we enjoy the job. How can you enjoy a shift when you don't feel motivated to even be there. I literally have to drag myself to work every time and the same sigh comes out of my body, when ever I enter the workplace. The only time I can actually say I enjoy a shift is when I'm working with certain team members. Working with people who make you feel good, appreciate your hard work and speak to you like a human being and not a member of slavery, can make a shift go so smoothly. This never happens when management are around. Majority of staff feel on edge. Its understandable that employees should work hard no matter what, but they should at least be able to feel comfortable as well.
Whenever management have somebody above them, they will obviously get the backlash from "the boss" when something goes wrong on shift and then the workers will then get the delegated tasks pushed upon them. Yes this is acceptable, however workers would not make a mistake if they were being managed correctly. For example, if we were to stay an extra hour at work, to support our other team members, then higher staff would not bat an eye or say thank you, but as soon as somebody is 5 minutes late then management will have you in the office, stressing about it.
My opinion comes from the motivation management theories, which came from a professor called Douglas McGregor. I believe that if an employee was given the responsibility of having some kind of control in the workplace and management would use creative ways of motivating staff, then a worker would enjoy their job a lot more, and possibly work harder. Human motivation comes from, the identification of a persons needs. These could be several things within a workplace such as security, shelter, relationships and social status. A persons emotionally needs, will have to be healthy for them to enjoy what they do for a living.
My word of advice is as soon as you get into a job and you have that feeling that management can not motivate you to work harder, then start looking for a new job straight away. Do not get too comfortable as it can get harder to leave and your emotions will be ripped apart and left confused.
Talk to you soon...
